The hardest thing about doing an event with Nasty Gal's Sophia Amoruso is getting her to agree to it. The second hardest thing is finding a picture of her to put on your post promoting tickets, because she so rarely agrees to do any press or events.

Indeed, she tells me that other than a semi-disastrous keynote she did for an industry conference, this is the first time she's taken the stage as the founder of one of the hottest companies in LA and one of the hottest ecommerce companies in the start up world generally.

Nasty Gal is an incredible story. You see very few truly bootstrapped ecommerce companies get to the scale of hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenues. Ecommerce is a logistically challenging business with very real startup gravity when it comes to carrying inventory, cash flow issues, shipping issues and returns, and systems running all of that. A social network only moves around pixels; ecommerce companies move around things. It's not typically something someone with zero business experience and no venture capital backers takes on.

It's even rarer that someone like that excels at it.

What makes Amoruso's story so inspiring is that she just made it happen, using her gut and the Web as her only guides. As she told me the first time I interviewed her: “Google is responsible for this business. When I wanted to know what kind of warehouse shelving to buy, I looked online. I could watch Stanford Business School videos on YouTube. I don’t go to conferences. I didn’t talk to anyone. I didn’t have to. I grew up on the Internet.”

It's not just the Google. Investor Danny Rimer of Index Ventures -- who's put more than $40 million into the company and is the only other board member -- has told me that Amoruso has some of the best instincts he's seen in any entrepreneur. That's saying something from the guy who backed massive hits like MySQL, Skype, Dropbox, and Etsy.
